Join Dead Ends Live for their weekend festival on March 17 & 18!

This event listing is for Saturday Workshop admission only!

Dead Ends Live has been created by Peter North, the onetime radio producer who hosted the popular program Dead Ends And Detours for 17 years on the CKUA Radio Network. The new live, indoor festival event will be built around the common themes and threads that ran through his radio show. Those common threads are the musical roots and branches of The Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia along with the influences and sounds of The Band and Bob Dylan, as well as mandolinist David Grisman and the inspiring musicians who built the new acoustic music scene.

The weekend of March 17 and 18, 2023, marks the return of Edmonton’s newest music festival Dead Ends Live. Born out of a love for the Grateful Dead songbook and the jam band culture, the inaugural Dead Ends Live thrilled fans of this broad musical canvas last spring! Organizers are thrilled to announce that guitarist and singer John Kadlecik, a prominent and critically acclaimed figure in the Grateful Dead extended family will be headlining the event with both solo and band performances at the Chateau Lacombe Hotel and McDougall Church.

About the Workshops:

After last year’s stunning Saturday afternoon set from Joe Craven and friends in McDougall, Dead Ends has expanded the workshop format.

Saturday afternoon kicks off with a Fiddle Summit as steered by local fiddle ace Daniel Gervais. Joining Daniel will be the great Calvin Vollrath, Shannon Johnson, Cam Neufeld and Jeremiah McDade and special guests. Expect a freewheeling set that touches on any number of fiddle and violin styles presented by this all-star cast. This workshop begins at 1:00PM at McDougall United Church.

A Roots of the Grateful Dead workshop follows the Fiddle Summit and is hosted by John Hewitt. The set will pinpoint some of the influential sounds and artists of the Grateful Dead. Everything from New Orleans piano gems to acoustic blues ala Lightnin’ Hopkins and pieces from the traditional folk book of the U.K. will be rolled out by a cast that includes bluegrass great Chris & Sally Jones, cellist Christine Hanson and bluesmen Rooster Davis and Tony D. This workshop begins around 3:00PM at McDougall United Church.

The afternoon workshop schedule concludes in the Chateau with a percussion / rhythm workshop co-hosted by Joe Craven with members of the Mbira Renaissance Band and special guests. We think this in one session Mickey Hart would love! This workshop begins at 4:30PM at the Chateau Lacombe Ballroom.
