2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of jazz piano legend, Dave Brubeck. To celebrate this occasion, the Yardbird Suite is pleased to present the Dan Brubeck Trio with Dan Brubeck on drums, Miles Black on piano and Miles Hill on bass.

This group provides a more traditional approach to the jazz trio. They offer an in-depth instrumental exploration of Dave Brubeck‘s music as well as some original compositions. The trio utilizes the vast improvisational skills of three avid soloists as they move together on a musical journey through often uncharted territory. The keywords here are improvisational exploration.

Dan Brubeck was mentored not only by his famous father but also by two consummate drum masters, Joe Morello and Alan Dawson. Over the years, he was featured on nearly a dozen albums with his father, toured widely with him and been an integral part of various Brubeck bands. He has toured and recorded with groups like The Band, Gerry Mulligan and Paul Desmond and recorded with jazz guitar legend Larry Coryell, singer-songwriter Livingston Taylor, jazz-pop singer Michael Franks, and pioneering blues guitarist Roy Buchanan.

Dan’s drumming style is both mesmerizing and unparalleled, and his distinctive and astonishingly textured drum solos have received standing ovations all over the world. His uncanny sense of timing and use of odd time signatures, combining melodic phrases with polyrhythms that often stretch far beyond the bar line, has earned the respect of many jazz critics worldwide. His mastery of complex rhythms has led to his reputation as one of the most talented and creative drummers in jazz.

Miles Black is a highly respected career musician bringing an enormous wealth of musical experience and expertise to almost every facet of the music industry. First known as one of Canada’s most accomplished jazz pianists, Miles is also highly acclaimed and sought after as an arranger, producer, composer, session musician, guitarist, vocalist, bassist, saxophonist, songwriter, and musical theatre director. Miles Black is the ’first call’ when musicians are looking for top professional enhancements to their projects.

Miles Hill is a bassist, recording engineer, and composer. As an electric and acoustic bass player, he has worked with some of the world’s biggest music names including Van Morrison, Michael Buble, Chad Kroeger of Nickelback and the Brazilian jazz superstar Ivan Lins. Miles is known for his profound sense of time, unique arrangements and diverse musical styles. He has played on over 600 recordings that cover the musical spectrum, from jazz, funk, and tango to country and rock.
