The Sandro Dominelli Group brings together drummer Sandro Dominelli, saxophonist Phil Dwyer, Hammond organist Jeff Jenkins and guitarist Jim Head for the first time, to present some jazz standards with a unique twist.

Sandro Dominelli is one of Canada’s most creative, talented and tasteful drummers. Through his continuing success as a much sought-after composer, bandleader, session player, and producer, he has proven to be an established luminary in the Canadian music scene.

Sandro’s first recording as a band leader “Café Varze Jazz” went on to receive top honours at the Western Canadian Music Awards as Outstanding Jazz Recording of the Year and was also nominated in 2004 for a JUNO in the ‘Best Traditional Jazz Album of the Year’ category. His follow-up album “Meet Me in the Alley” brought him more success including a Canadian Music Week Award for ‘Favorite Jazz Artist of the Year’. Dominelli released “The Alvo Sessions” in 2010 featuring Chris Tarry and Rez Abbasi for which he won another Western Canadian Music Award. In 2018, the same trio released a follow-up recording entitled “Here and Now.”

In 2013 Phil Dwyer was appointed as a Member of the Order Of Canada. He was cited for “his contributions to jazz as a performer, composer and producer, and for increasing access to music education in his community.” In 2015 he was recognized by the Royal Conservatory of Music as an Honorary Fellow. These distinctions arise from an illustrious thirty year career collaborating with a storied roster of great musical artists, crossing stylistic and geographic borders. Phil has appeared on ten Juno Award-winning recordings, and over thirty nominated recordings.

After studies in New York in the 1980s with Richie Beirach, Kenny Barron and Fred Hersch, pianist/organist Jeff Jenkins worked with many American jazz legends including Phil Woods, Freddie Hubbard, David Fathead Newman, Eddie Harris, Richie Cole, Bobby Hutcherson, Curtis Fuller, Benny Golson, John Abercrombie, and Clark Terry. He also leads his own organ group called The Organization.

Jim Head has worked with a number of acclaimed Canadian and American jazz artists, including Sheila Jordan, Tim Hagans, Jane Bunnett, P.J. Perry, Kirk MacDonald, Lew Tabackin, David Braid, Hugh Fraser, Doug Riley, and Steve Slagle. He has performed in concerts, clubs, and festivals across Canada, as well as the U.S., China, and Mexico. In addition to his jazz work, he has performed with several pop, folk, and, roots artists including Serena Ryder, Jann Arden, Darrel Scott, and Amy Sky. As a music educator, Jim has been the guitar department head at MacEwan University since 2007.
